About
The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin fosters the work of contemporary artists who challenge boundaries. The Gallery encourages broad public engagement, awareness and exploration of artistic expression.. The Gallery's work extends to local, national, and international communities.
The Gallery’s Blackfoot name, Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin, describes the new making of images, related to the telling of Blackfoot peoples’ stories. This name was given to the Gallery in October 2020 by Elder Bruce Wolf Child and Elder Mary Fox, grounding the Gallery in the communities past and present of this place, and providing key context for the work we do.
Today, the Gallery is one of the core arts and culture organizations in Lethbridge, serving as a primary contemporary art institution south of Calgary, and has become a significant Canadian contemporary art centre. Throughout nearly 50 years of operations, the Gallery has become known nationally, and internationally, for an ambitious program of exhibitions that are of interest not only to residents and visitors in southern Alberta, but to national and international contemporary art communities. The Gallery has become known for our unwavering commitment to artists, and provides diverse platforms for artists to connect with local, national, and international audiences.
